02"This will allow the Eco-city to become a model satellite city," says Singapore's Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Z4 rail line on Thursday, April 28th.

Construction on a rail network linking the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city to the wider Tianjin region has finally been launched.

The Eco-city is a bilateral collaboration project between Singapore and China to develop an economically vibrant, socially harmonious, environmentally-friendly and resource-efficient city in Tianjin.

In a press release, Singapore's Ministry of National Development (MND) said the 30 sq km Eco-city is also on track to realise its goal as the role model for sustainable development for other Chinese cities and beyond. The number of people living or working in the Eco-city has more than doubled from 20,000 in 2014 to more than 50,000 in 2016, it said.

Besides connecting to the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway Extension, the rail line will also link the Eco-city to Beijing, Tianjin City and the rest of the Tianjin Binhai New Area.

It begins in Hangu New Town before heading south through areas like the Eco-city and the Yujiapu Commercial District. While at Yujiapu, people can transfer to a high-speed train linking them to Tianjin city and Beijing.

Currently, residents will have to spend 1.5 hours on public transport, involving multiple transfers, to get to the Eco-city. With the new Z4 line, they will only have to spend about an hour. Construction on the Z4 line is expected to be completed by 2020.

"I am very excited to see the transformation of Tianjin Eco-city from a barren wasteland to what it is today," said Mr Wong. "Today's groundbreaking for the Z4 rail line is a much-awaited development. The improved rail connectivity will provide a further boost to the Eco-city's growth."

He added: "This will allow the Eco-city to become a model satellite city, serving the surrounding regions with its efficient administration, business-friendly policies and conducive living environment. It will also bring the Eco-city closer to realizing its vision of being the model of sustainable development for other Chinese cities."

The Republic and China also reiterated their commitment to ensure the continued development and success of the Eco-city on Thursday, as it approaches the 10 year milestone in 2018.

At the 7th Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city Joint Working Committee Meeting co-chaired by Mr. Wong and his counterpart Mr. Chen Zhenggao of China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, both leaders reaffirmed the Eco-city's achievements and noted that it had developed very much in line with the urban development guidelines issued by the Chinese State Council in February this year.
