Expectations from employees are being increased each day due to which work-life balance is becoming very difficult to achieve. There is a lot of pressure on the employees to work more and put all the efforts they can to perform well. Working hours have increased and the staff has to sit in the office for a much longer period, even 10-12 hours a day at times. Many companies these days are practicing this culture of overtime and due to this fast-paced and a highly competitive business world, family life, relationships and even employees' work performance is being affected in a negative way.


Following are some of the reasons that can tell the importance of work-life balance -

Increased work pressure and fear of competition force the employees to work more and more. Employees also might have a fear of losing their jobs if they do not stay and work in the office for a longer period. This situation causes stress and leads to burnout if not dealt with timely. Employees have to face health issues, sick leaves increase and their performance also becomes poor due to reduced efficiency. So what's the use of working late when you are not even performing well?


- Attracting and Retaining Top Talent


Practicing work-life balance in your organization can provide you with a competitive edge in attracting and retaining top talent in the industry. Employees always prefer organizations that really care for them. If you understand the need for work-life balance of your employees, they would never look for other opportunities in the job market and even the top talent would also like to join your company. So to retain and attract skilled employees, work-life balance is really important.

What can Employers do?

- Employers should offer flexible time-tables to employees to maintain work-life balance. If employees are working for more number of hours than usual, then allow them to have even longer weekends.


- Encourage employees to take paid leave and spend some quality time with their loved ones. In this way they will remain happy both at work and at home.


- Ensure your employees that you really care for them. Encourage them to take care of their health and fitness by providing some extra health benefits like gym memberships etc.


- Make a rule of communication with employees after work time is over. Do not contact employees after office hours, until and unless there is a deadline of an urgent project that needs their immediate attention.


- Allow employees to make decisions regarding how they manage their time for tasks that are assigned to them. Let them decide how they complete certain tasks within the given timeline.


- Try not to make employees sit in the office after office hours, but if it is really required then compensate them by offering bonuses and other incentives for overworking. This keeps them motivated and even willing to work for a longer period.


Maintaining a work-life balance may not be easy in this fast-paced era, but one should understand that it is essential for living a happy and healthy life.
