An Australian man has been sentenced to death by a court in southern China over drug smuggling charges.
The Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court sentenced the Australian national on June 10 as a “first-instance verdict on the smuggling of drugs”.
The man’s assets would also be seized, the court said in a statement on its website.
The man was arrested in 2013 after customs officers at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport discovered more than 7.5kg of methamphetamine in his possession.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that they were providing consular assistance to an Australian man detained in China.
