Japan's government is arranging to double the cap on arrivals from overseas to 20,000 people per day in June, government sources said Wednesday.
The relaxation is expected to go ahead following an examination of airport quarantine infrastructure and the state of domestic infections after Japan's Golden Week holidays that ended last weekend.
The government is currently looking into this issue. But as early as May, the first limited groups of foreign tourists may be admitted to Japan. Also, entry may be allowed to relatives of foreigners living in Japan in “exceptional cases”.
Currently, only Japanese citizens, foreigners permanently residing in the country with long-term visas, and diplomats can enter Japan. At the same time, there is a restriction on entry – no more than 10,000 people per day.
