Daxing International Airport said that it will add about 20 overseas routes as the summer schedule starts on Sunday, strengthening commercial and cultural ties between China and the rest of the world.
Daxing International Airport (PKX), also known as Beijing New Airport, is the biggest airport in the world. It is also the second international airport of Beijing along with Beijing Capital International airport. The airport’s design is pioneering while its location on Daxing District (the southern suburbs of Beijing) is ideal in order to serve the Chinese capital and the neighboring areas of Tianjin and Hebei. The new mega-airport hub is expected to handle up to 45 million passengers per year by 2021 and reach an outstanding 100 million in the future.
Daxing airport is located at the frontier between Beijing and Langfang, Hebei Province and is expected to serve the needs of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei areas. Its location was selected after thorough analysis. With a 46km-distance from Tiananmen Square, a 67km-distance from Beijing International Airpor, a 130km-distance from Tianjin City Center and a 26km-distance from Langfang, Daxing airport aims to become the main airport hub of the region.
The gigantic Daxing airport, with the impressive shape which has given it the nickname “Starfish”, has enormous dimensions. There are currently 4 runways (with the prospect of becoming 7 in the future) and a vast terminal building covering a 700.000m² area while the ground transportation centre extends to 80.000m².
If you arrive at Daxing airport and you wish to get to Tianjin area, you can choose between 3 transportation options: the taxi, the bus and the train. Daxing airport taxis are fairly comfortable but if you find yourself in a traffic jam, the transfer may end up very expensive. Diversely, as fast as China trains may be, there isn’t yet a direct line serving the particular connection but you will have to change 4 high-speed and metro trains and thus, the journey will be quite exhausting and time-consuming. Finally, the intercity airport bus will take you to your destination in approximately 2.5h.
The new Daxing International airport is located approximately 130-km away from the city center of Tianjin. If you are travelling by car, you will find several available options leaving the Daxing airport behind you; you can combine highways G3 and G2501 and arrive at your destination in Tianjin in about 60 minutes, traversing a 104km distance or take the highway S30 and reach Tianjin, 135km away, in about 80 minutes. However, you should keep in mind that you will have to pay tolls no matter the chosen route.
There is not yet a direct train connection from Daxing airport to Tianjin. The construction of the line handling the connection in question is expected to be ready to operate in 2023. The high-speed trains of the new railway will travel up to 250km/h and will reach their final stop (Tianjin West Railway Station) in 36 minutes. If you take a train from Tianjin to Daxing International Airport via Beijing South, Beijing South station, Jiaomen West Station, Jiaomen East, Caoqiao, and Caoqiaowill take you around 1h 6m.
For the time being, Daxing airport taxis don’t offer fixed prices. However, you can expect that the estimated fare for the 130-km trip from Daxing airport to Tianjin city center is about 350-500 RMB depending on the traffic conditions and the exact location of your drop-off point. Furthermore, you will have to pay an extra fee for the tolls while during the night shift, there is a 20% surcharge. The journey to Tianjin city center usually lasts around 90 minutes with light traffic.
