A stray cat famous for listening to lectures at Peking University is receiving treatment at a pet hospital after it suffered leg injuries.
Students at the university became concerned about the fluffy yellow feline, which netizens nicknamed "Academic Cat" because of its studious habits, after they noticed the animal was struggling to walk.

Liu Yi, a university student, said she often fed the cat tidbits when it visited her college laboratory but had rarely seen it this summer until last week, when her friend arrived holding it in her arms.

"It looked bad and much thinner than before," she said. "We don't know how it was injured so badly and doctors can't be sure either."

The two took the cat to the Najiya Animal Clinic in Dongcheng district. Veterinarians there diagnosed a fractured femur in her left rear leg, which was later operated on.

On Wednesday, the cat was lying in a cage with a steel pin in her leg. It still struggles to stand but has gotten better in other ways: staff members said its appetite has returned.

"It couldn't stand for a long time yesterday," said a customer who had brought her own pet to the hospital and was helping to feed the cat. She declined to give her name.

Zhao, a nurse who gave only her surname, said the cat is recovering and could be released this weekend. The steel pin, though, will have to stay in her leg for up to two months.

Liu and her classmates have so far collected more than 1,500 yuan ($230) to pay for the treatment and will talk to veterinarians about whether the cat should be taken back to campus to be cared for by students.

Xu Caiyue, who runs Lost Angel, a voluntary association at Peking University that cares for stray cats, said the injured animal could be put up for adoption when it fully recovers.

Stories about the cat, which has no tail and is estimated to be about 7 years old, spread on the Internet after students witnessed it strolling into classrooms and listening to lectures in 2004. Some said it prefers lectures about philosophy and the arts.
