Lord Mayor Robert Doyle will lead a six-day business investment trip to China in October at a cost of $70,000.

He will visit Tianjin, Beijing and  Guangzhou.

The lord mayor will launch the first purpose built AFL oval in North Asia in Tianjin —  the  $1.5 million project is the result of five years of collaboration between the City of Melbourne, the AFL and Melbourne Football Club.

Councillor Kevin Louey will join the lord mayor on the trip, along with council officers.

Cr Carl Jetter, who will be in China at the time on private business, will also meet with the delegation.

Cr Doyle said the visit was about boosting investment between Melbourne and China.

‘‘This is about bringing business to Melbourne, that’s what we’re going to do,’’ Cr Doyle said.

‘‘I am determined that we will bring home, not just memoranda of understanding, but actually signed contracts for work between our great city and Tianjin in particular, but more widely in China,’’ he said.

‘‘This is a business mission, it is to drive prosperity for the city of Melbourne and to bring us investment and generate economic activity and employment here in Melbourne.’’
