BGI has launched a joint bioinformatics and computing laboratory with the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin (NSCC-TJ).

The laboratory, called Tianhe-BGI Bioinformatics and Computing Joint Laboratory, is located in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin, China.

Tianhe refers to Tianhe-1A, the second fastest supercomputer in the world currently installed at the NSCC-TJ, which achieves speeds of up to 2.57 petaflops/s.

Researchers from the two organizations are expected to collaborate in the fields of supercomputing and biological sciences, and boost the rapid development of OMICS-related industries.

“In the past, it took a year to conduct a project on the genomics association study of 500 human samples, but now with Tian-he, three hours is enough,” said Professor Jian Wang, President of BGI.

“We believe this will broaden the applications of Tianhe-1A in life science and greatly accelerate the development of frontier of science and technology.”

Last September, BGI-Tianjin was founded in the Tianjin Airport Economic Zone with the aim of building a genomics research center and production base in North China.
