altThe 30th Annual Plenary Session of the InterAction Council will be held in the north China city of Tianjin from May 10 to 12.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin made the announcement at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

The session will focus on issues including the current international situation, global financial crisis, global security affairs and water crisis, according to Liu.

About 20 former heads of state and government will attend the meeting, including former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and former Federal Chancellor of Austria Franz Vranitzky, he said.

The InterAction Council was established in 1983 under the initiative of former Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda.

The idea was that a group of former world leaders would be free to reflect on their experiences and look beyond the immediacy of current issues and the limitations of national interests to focus on the long term structural factors driving the global agenda.

As the session coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the organization, it will carry great significance, said Liu, noting that China will help the InterAction Council hold a successful meeting.
