Korean Pianist, Sonja Park, to Perform at Wellington College’s Festival of Education

altWellington College International Tianjin will be holding its first Festival of Education at the College on Friday, 8th March and Saturday, 9th March. While Wellington College in the UK holds an annual educational festival, this is the first time such an event will be held in China. The theme of the Festival will be International Education and its Developing Role in China. A series of keynote speakers have been arranged from the UK, China and East Asia, coming from a variety of backgrounds, such as school education, leading universities, the IBO, literacy and the teaching of English as a second language, the world of film and professional sport. Many of these presentations will involve discussions groups and debates. Accompanying these main items will be focused workshops and activity sessions, for students and parents alike, based on the Eight Aptitudes, Wellington’s unique model of education, and involving art, drama, dance, music and film. The emphasis will very firmly be on participation, and having fun, all in the enviable facilities that Wellington College has to offer. 
 
Korean Pianist,Sonja Park,will be performing a recital at the  Education Festival on the evening of  9th March. This will be Ms Park’s first visit to China. Her recital programme at Wellington’s  Seldon Theatre  will include works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Schumman.
 
Sonja Park was largely self-taught. In 1999 she was invited to study at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna by renowned Professor of Piano, Alexander Jenner. A number of awards and scholarships followed and by2000 she was considered one of the brightest talents by her professors at the University of Vienna.She went on to be awarded prizes in a number of international competitions, including the Brahms International Competition in Austria and the Rodolfo Caporalli Competition in Italy . 
 
In recent years Sonja Park has given concerts in collaboration with pianists Paul Badura Scoda, Dora Schwarzberg, viola virtuoso Maxim Rysanov and conductor Nikolas Harnoncourt.Last year she appeared in concert halls in Tokyo, London and Florence and made her Russian debut recital at the prestigious Andre Sakharov International Arts Festival.In 2010 Ms Park was invited to be a jury member for the Gulf Chopin Piano Competition. In the same year she played Rachmaninoff’s Piano concerto No 3 with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra in Doha. She is currently based in Doha, Qatar, with her musician husband Joris Laenen, and continues to work closely with the Qatar Philharmonic.
