altA recent survey of women in north China's Tianjin Municipality has revealed that women with bachelor's degrees are more likely to have happier marriages than those without college education.

Interestingly, women with post-grad degrees were less likely to describe their marriages as happy compared to those with only undergraduate degrees, although the post-graduates still had a higher level of marital happiness than those without college education.

The survey was conducted by the Tianjin Daily and polled 5,796 Tianjin women aged between 20 and 65, covering issues such as education levels, personal and family incomes, and child bearing.

The survey showed that nearly 88 percent of women with bachelor's degrees are satisfied with their marital life, the highest among the women.

"College-educated women today are more likely to rate their marriages as 'happy' because incomes, careers and lifestyles vary in terms of women's education levels, which can impact the evaluation given by women to their marriage," said Zhang Baoyi, a researcher from the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences.

"The declining ratio for female post-graduates is due to the gap between reality and ideals because better educated women usually have higher expectations of marriage," Zhang added.

The survey also found that income played a big role in women's satisfaction with their marriages. A total of 92 percent of women who earned a monthly salary above 10,000 CNY (1,641 USD) considered their marriage happy, a sharp contrast to the 79 percent whose monthly incomes were below 1,500 CNY (246 USD).

In addition, the wider the income gap between husband and wife, the more likely the wife was to feel dissatisfied with her marriage.

Families with more children also tended to report lower happiness levels. Slightly over 86 percent of childless women said they feel satisfied with their marriage, compared to the ratio for women with three or more children, which fell to less than 80 percent.

Increasing incomes have also seen more women participating in household purchases and 65 percent of women said they control the majority of household expenses.

However, when it comes to physical fitness, only 17 percent of women polled said they exercise every day and over 40 percent said they never exercise. Instead, most of the women said they would rather go shopping or spend time on their beauty routines.

More than 90 percent of the women said they regularly spend money on education training, traveling and healthcare. Women with higher education preferred to read, spend time online, and watch movies and performances, while less educated women tended to spend their spare time watching TV programs.
