altIn celebration of International Francophone Day, the “Mars en Folie” music festival is coming back to town for the third time this Friday, with its 7th edition featuring a diversity of francophone music from folk and Celtic rock to literary rap.

At a press conference held yesterday, Deputy Consul General of Switzerland in Hong Kong, Erwin Lüthi, as well as three representatives from AF Macao, introduced the annual concert that is part of the 19th Francophonie Festival in China.

The Macau concert is the penultimate stop of a tour hosted by the Alliance Française network, which includes a total of 40 concerts in 14 cities throughout China starting in Tianjin on 5 March and to conclude in Hong Kong this Saturday.

To present “a wide palette of sounds,” the organizsrs chose a mix of emerging musicians from the French-speaking world, namely the French band “Epsylon,” singer-songwriter Chantal Archambault from Québec, Canada, and Swiss multilingual rapper Greis.

"For France, we like to promote emerging bands that are starting to become famous. This is the idea,” said AF Macao director, Xavier Garnier. “Definitely for Switzerland, and I believe also for Canada, it’s not that we are going to promote the established artists, but the emerging ones, to give them a platform for international exposure,” added Mr Lüthi.

The six-member band “Epsylon” is introduced for its raw energy and its contagious Celtic rock style, whilst Archambault is expected to bring her evocative folk rock melodies that balance between peaceful ballads and upbeat arrangements. Moreover, Greis is said to present a type of urban poetry combining mixed styles and words in his literary rap.

The “Mars en Folie” concert was initially introduced to Macau in 2012, which marked the first celebration of the Francophone Festival in the city. According to AF Macao vice-president, Éric Sautede, the previous two concerts have drawn a total of 600 attendees and the Alliance is trying to promote more francophonie performances in town.
