China Construction Bank will extend 400 billion to 500 billion CNY in new loans in 2009, 13-15% more than this year, Thomson Financial News reported on Tuesday. The bank signed an agreement on Monday with the Binhai New Area, to open a line of credit of at least 180 billion CNY (26 billion USD) for infrastructure projects and local firms over the next three years, the bank said on its website. The agreement runs to the end of 2010.

BT 202002 340x458BT 202002 QR PDFOn 31 December, 2019, World Health Organization (WHO) was alerted to several cases of pneumonia in Wuhan. The virus that caused this did not match any other known viruses. The local health authority later identified it as a new virus named 2019-nCoV belonging to the family of Coronaviruses, which includes the common cold virus and viruses such as SARS and MERS.

As of Saturday morning, February 8th, China has over 34,500 confirmed cases of the Wuhan coronavirus, leading to 722 deaths, and it has infected nearly 35,000 persons worldwide and 724 deaths.

Over 100 million people are under partial or full lockdown in Chinese cities. Moreover, the virus has spread globally to more than 25 countries. The number of infections and deaths related to the outbreak of this mysterious virus in China keeps rising, but economists and analysts have counselled caution, saying it too soon to sound the alarm about the impact on the global economy.

Foreign companies with significant footprints in China, such as Toyota, Airbus, McDonald, Starbucks, Boeing and Disney, are suspending operations, and many countries are instituting travel restrictions as they respond to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Currently, the coronavirus is the Number 1 threat to global investors. They are becoming jittery regarding the uncertainty, and it could erase 0.5 - 1% points off China GDP growth this year against a baseline forecast of 5.9%. The Chinese economy has trembled following the outbreak, causing significant instability in the country, and the government will have to race against time to limit the impact.

Good news was when Director general of the World Health Organization said that the number of new coronavirus cases for last few days have dropped. However, the numbers could go up again, but the last few days were showing a declining trend.

We talk in this issue with Ivy Liu, General Manager of Banana Aviation, about her impressive career in the aviation industry, and her passion for her work. Ivy believes that women all over the world face different challenges in developing their careers.

BT 201912 QR PDFWe have interacted this month with Dr Joseph Shumway, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Tianjin United Family Hospital (TJU), an American with an impressive career as a medical doctor.

Tianjin United Family Hospital is a leading medical facility, integrating excellent and safe healthcare under one trusted United Family Health brand. It incorporates a dedicated and credentialed team of medical staff in the mission of providing the best care to their valued patients. One can expect personalized attention and quality healthcare by highly competent and skilled medical professionals, but we also can find passionate people performing their daily work in a perfect harmony.

Last month economic data showed disparate performance in different areas of the economy. Manufacturing activity is weakening, but consumer sentiment is still healthy. Domestic demand for consumption remains strong, while global demand is impacted by trade war concerns. The government is adamant about maintaining growth and is taking concrete measures. The true impact of these efforts can be measured only after a necessary time interval for them to materialize. Even if the trade war tensions do not ease, there are still plenty of strategies that the government can explore. The government is likely aware of its options. It will probably have to contend with alternatives, as a trade deal is not yet easily foreseeable.

The rise of the Chinese banking sector and the Chinese financial institutions at large signifies a shift in power in the global financial infrastructure and architecture. We analyse in our Feature Story column the reason why they represent a challenge to the system that was produced by the Bretton Woods agreement. The western financial system is no longer the only player, and in the future, this may pave the way for a multilateral global financial system.

With the growth of the new retail ecosystem in China, the Chinese tech companies are increasingly becoming more powerful with massive repositories of data on Chinese consumers. Many brands take the assistance of these Chinese tech biggies in entering the China market, whether it’s by using the latest AI technology, building an inventory platform, or a delivery infrastructure. Get to know in our In Depth section how China is revolutionising the concept of ‘Smart Retailing’.

NEWS - Tianjin Finance

BT 201911 340X458BT 201911 QR PDFThe world's smart luxury travelers have a new destination and reason to stay in Tianjin. In the Heart of the city, a new state-of-the-art hotel has opened in the vibrant Nankai District. The building design is inspired by the city's historical and cultural landmarks, with stately hotel rooms, European courtyards and stunning interiors that showcase a blend of modern chic and Art Deco.

Conrad Tianjin offers exceptional dining experiences in its four outlets, but also has the third-largest meeting space amongst the city’s hotels. You can feel relaxed and inspired throughout your stay in Conrad Tianjin, and we have the honour to interact in this issue of Business Tianjin with its General Manager, Mr. Fredrik Genberg and learn more about this luxury retreat for all global travelers.

From the economy point of view, it seems that large businesses are facing struggles, perhaps in their international operations, whereas small and medium businesses seem to be growing. The growth of SMEs is usually good, as it generates job opportunities and increases social security.

Optimism was in the air, but not for long. Trade talks seemed to pave the way for good news, but results were lacklustre. Some indicators are pointing in a promising direction, but not all. It seemed that recent positive developments were simply short-term bouts of positive sentiment, and they did not indicate a long-term change in trend and reversal of the ongoing slowdown.

There is reason for optimism, however, which is that both parties, the US and China, benefit from a potential trade agreement. This pressure could possibly lead to an agreement in the last minute, before time runs out.

BT 201910 340X458BT 201910 QR PDFSince its foundation Wellington College China has established schools and kindergartens in Tianjin, Shanghai and Hangzhou to provide education for children aged three to eighteen, and is recognised as one of the most influential international education groups in China and beyond.

We interact this month with Peter Randall, Director of Marketing and Admissions of Wellington College International Tianjin, and congratulate him for the recent celebration of the 10th anniversary of Wellington College China, and ask him about the most remarkable memories of these past 10 years.

Wellington College is one of the most highly regarded schools in the United Kingdom and also one of its greatest educational institutions, providing pioneering, innovative and transforming education for girls and boys. This vibrant and popular co-educational day and boarding school has reached new heights in today's rapidly changing and interconnected world.

In 2013, Schlote Group opened their first production site outside Europe in Tianjin, a modern and innovative production site for transmission components. Schlote Automotive Parts (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. currently employs almost 300 people, and has several important, such as BMW, Volkswagen and ZF AG. On 3rd of September, 2019, was successfully held the opening ceremony of Phase II & R&D Centre, and Business Tianjin Magazine was honoured to interview Mr Jürgen Schlote, CEO of Schlote Group, on the topic of Schlote Group’s development strategy in China.

External pressures are mounting against the Chinese economy. Those are mainly represented by the trade war and global growth slowdown. Future growth in the Chinese economy will depend on how much the economy can move from being exports-driven to self-reliant. The government is trying to stem the decline. You can get more details in our economy column.
