At least 23 people were injured in an earthquake measuring 5.1 that hit southwest China's Yunnan Province on Thursday. Local authorities have sent emergency crews and relief supplies to the area.
According to China Earthquake Administration, the epicenter was located at a depth of 16 kilometers. Fifteen of the injured were from Lufeng while eight came from Yuanmou, two neighboring counties. Many houses were toppled.
Gu Yishan, official of Yunnan Seismological Bureau, said, "This is the first destructive earthquake in Yunnan in 2010. Its epicenter is near the Chuxiong-Tonghai fault zone. The earthquake was related to activity in this zone."
