China's Tianjin Soda Plant is expecting to complete construction of a 2-ethylhexanol plant and an isobutyl alcohol plant at Binhai in Tianjin province in October, two months later than previous estimates, a company source said.

Until a month ago, the plants were slated for completion by early August.

With capacities to produce 140,000 mt/year of 2-EH and 85,000 mt/year of IBA, the plants are expected to consume up to 150,000 mt/year of propylene when run at full capacity.

At least half of the propylene raw material will be sourced locally. The rest will be imported, with Japan and South Korea likely to be key suppliers.

Tianjin Soda is planning to import propylene through Tianjin's Lingang port, where the company has eight 2,500 cubic meter pressurized tanks that can hold up to 1,150 mt of propylene each. Tianjin plans to use at least six of the tanks, possibly leasing out the other two, Platts reported previously.

The company is also in the final stages of building a 500,000 mt/year methanol plant and a 200,000 mt/year acetic acid plant at Binhai that are to start up in late August.

Tianjin Soda's key products are soda ash, ammonium chloride, fertilizers, refined salt, sodium bicarbonate, sodium metasilicate, synthetic ammonia, food grade carbon dioxide and flake calcium chloride. 2-EH and IBA are used widely in the building materials and automotive industries.
