Police in Guangdong Province say they've captured a man who's admitted to lighting a fire on a subway. The incident happened in the capital city Guangzhou, Xinhua reported.
The suspect, whose surname is Wu, turned himself in on Tuesday morning. It is reported that he regretted his actions and that he said he was feeling depressed. This caused him to start the fire with a gas cylinder.
Smoke appeared in one of the carriages as the train traveled on Line 5 between Xiaobei and Guangzhou Railway Station on Monday night.
A statement from the Guangzhou Metro Corporation confirmed that the train made an emergency stop at the nearest station. Passengers were moved to safety and the fire was then put out.
There were no injuries and the metro was back in operation in 9 minutes. Police found a 5-kg gasholder, but there was no sign of its owner.
Guangzhou police have confirmed they have a suspect in custody, and say an investigation is now in progress.
