The 4th Singapore-Tianjin Economic and Trade Council (STETC) meeting saw ten MOUs (memoranda of understanding) signed to promote economic collaborations between Singapore and the Chinese city.

The council also encouraged companies to explore business opportunities in Tianjin's outlying districts such as Xiqing and Wuqing.

Tianjin is jump-starting several environmental services projects in China and Singapore looks set to participate in some of those eco-projects.

Singapore's National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan added that there was the possibility of the republic replicating the projects in other parts of China going forward.

He also underlined the importance of an eco-friendly city that is crucial in retaining top talent.

Singapore is Tianjin's fifth largest investor as at the end of 2010, and bilateral trade increased 12 percent in the first five months of 2011 compared to the same period a year earlier.

The Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sinotel Technologies and Tianjin Keppel Hong Hui, under the Keppel Group, were amongst those that signed MOUs at the ceremony on Tuesday.

Mr Khaw said: "World class talents are globally mobile...obviously they will choose cities where it is pleasant and comfortable, lively. The city that will succeed in future is the city that will make itself livable and sustainable."
