An explosion that occurred near a bank in central China's Wuhan city Thursday afternoon has left two people dead and more than 10 injured, according to local police.

The explosion occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on the sidewalk outside of a China Construction Bank (CCB) branch in the Hongshan district of Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, police said.

An initial investigation showed that the blast was triggered by an unidentified object outside of the bank, according to the police.

The injured have been sent to nearby hospitals for treatment, although their conditions are not yet known.

The injured include several bank employees and security guards, who suffered slight injuries, sources with CCB's Hubei headquarters said.

Glass shards and other debris were scattered on the sidewalk and main road in front of the bank. Facilities inside both the bank and an adjacent drugstore were also damaged, employees said.

The blast damaged a few vehicles parked near the bank, breaking their windows and deforming their doors. A security van used to collect cash from the bank was parked outside, covered in dust.

The bank did not say if any cash was lost from the security van.

A further investigation into the explosion is under way.
