Shipments of inexpensive tablets likely to reach 100 million units in 2013alt

[Thursday 18 April 2013]

As demand for inexpensive entry-level tablets in the China market is growing fast and retail prices have dropped to below USD 100 currently, 100 million tablets are likely to be shipped in the market in 2013, according to China-based supply chain makers.

China-based component providers believe total tablet shipments from tier-one brands such as Apple are also likely to reach 100 million units in China in 2013.

China-based component makers noted that total shipments of inexpensive tablets in China reached 60 million units in 2012 and the figure is likely to grow in 2013. Currently, prices of some 7-8 inch inexpensive tablets in China have fallen to USD 70-80/unit, said component makers.

According to Taiwan-based component firms, market potential of inexpensive tablets is growing and major brands such as Lenovo, Acer and HP have been introducing products for this particular market.

Cooperating with Taiwan-based chip provider MediaTek, Acer introduced Iconia B1, a 7-inch tablet that emphasizes price-performance ratio. The retail price for this product is around USD 150/unit. Acer plans to introduce 8- and 10-inch inexpensive tablets with MediaTek chipsets in the future. The firm targets 2013 tablet shipments to reach 10 million units.

Some component providers believe product differentiation is hard to achieve for inexpensive tablets and with tier-one brands entering the market, China-based inexpensive tablet makers are going to face challenges.

Taiwan-based panel makers noted that demand for smartphone and tablet panels has been growing, hence supply has been tight. However, prices of smartphone and tablet panels have yet to fluctuate.
