Li Yang, Chinese educator and language instructor, creator of Crazy English, an unorthodox method of teaching English, converted to Buddhism recently in the Shaoling Temple in Dengfeng of Central China's Henan province. The Abbot of Shaoling Temple, Shi Yongxin, accepted Li Yang as his disciple.
During the conversion ceremony, Li expressed his willingness to provide English training for Shaolin monks in order to help Shaolin better connect with the world. The news aroused a hot debate on the internet. Some netizens struggled to believe the news.
In fact, Li Yang is just a Shaolin disciple, not a true "monk".
Conversion to Buddhism does not mean becoming a monk. To become real monks, men have to adhere to 250 precepts, while women have to adhere to 380 precepts. In fact, like many celebrities, Li is just a disciple.Â
